Hardware Solutions
Mimic builds customized force feedback devices that meet a wide range of force, tracking, workspace, and I/O requirements. Mimic utilizes a tension-based design that offers significant advantages over linkage-based (robotic arm) haptic devices. Unlike linkage-based devices, there are less practical limitations to the workspace size and the amount of force that can be safely rendered when using Mimic’s tension-based design. As a result, Mimic can deliver customized devices with workspaces that range from the size of a softball to the size of a large room.
Unlike links, the cables used in a tension-based system have little mass. This essentially eliminates inertial effects and increases the accuracy of the applied force. Cables are also much safer than links in that they have little mass that can collide with a user. Another big advantage of cables over links is that they are visually unobtrusive. They do not obstruct one’s view, as would robotic arms. Stereoscopic 3-D projection can therefore be incorporated to allow virtual objects to be placed within the frame of a tension-based device so that visualization can be co-located with the user’s sense of touch.
Mimic’s hardware incorporates a modular design structure that utilizes re-usable components. This lowers the cost of manufacturing and enables rapid prototype development. One key component of Mimic’s modular design is the Mimic Controller Box that includes a wide assortment of controllers and data channels. This enables the design of a wide range of haptic systems without the need to create a new controller circuit board for each device.
Think your haptic requirements are too complicated to be cost effective? Then give Mimic a call and prepare to be pleasantly surprised! Many of our customized systems sell for less than off-the-shelf devices sold by other companies. Contact Mimic today to get a quote!
